PFA pipes and welding rods: Analysis of industrial applications of high-performance fluoroplastic materials
Jul 08, 2025
As an important member of the fluoroplastic family, PFA (perfluoroalkoxy resin) is widely used in chemical, semiconductor, pharmaceutical and other fields due to its excellent chemical stability, high temperature resistance and low friction coefficient. As key connecting components, the performance of PFA pipes and supporting welding rods directly affects the reliability and service life of the system. This article will analyze the technical points of PFA pipes and welding rods from three aspects: material properties, application scenarios and welding processes.
1. Core advantages of PFA pipes
PFA pipes inherit the corrosion resistance of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), and at the same time improve the processing fluidity by introducing perfluoroalkoxy structure, so that it can be seamlessly connected by hot melt welding. Its long-term use temperature range is -200℃ to +260℃, and its short-term tolerance temperature can reach 300℃, which can meet the needs of extreme working conditions. In addition, PFA has extremely high surface smoothness (Ra value can be less than 0.1μm), which effectively reduces fluid resistance and reduces the risk of scaling, and is particularly outstanding in high-purity fluid delivery systems.
2. Matching design of PFA welding rods
PFA welding rods and pipes use the same base material formula to ensure the chemical compatibility and mechanical strength of the welded joints. High-quality welding rods must meet the following standards: the melting index matches the pipe (usually 3-5g/10min), the impurity content is less than 10ppm, and the tensile strength is ≥20MPa. Special specification welding rods can also enhance creep resistance by adding carbon fiber or glass microbeads, which is suitable for high-pressure conditions.
3. Key control points of welding process
PFA pipe welding mainly adopts two methods: hot melt butt welding or flaring socket. Hot melt welding requires precise control of temperature (usually 350-400℃), pressure (0.1-0.3MPa) and cooling time (not less than 15 minutes) to avoid bubbles or cold welding defects. Flaring welding requires the flaring tool accuracy to reach ±0.05mm and maintain a stable state for 1-2 minutes after the pipe is inserted. It is worth noting that the humidity of the welding environment must be lower than 60% to prevent the formation of pores caused by water vaporization.
With the growing demand for corrosion-resistant materials in the industrial field, the market demand for PFA pipes and welding rods continues to expand. Mastering the correct selection and welding technology has become an important part of ensuring the long-term stable operation of the fluid system. In the future, with the advancement of material modification technology, the application potential of PFA products in more severe environments will be further released.
